Tucked in the historic Corte Botera of Venice's Castello district, Riccardo Guaraldi’s violin-making workshop is a quiet space filled with the scent of aged wood, evoking the atmosphere of centuries-old luthiers’ ateliers. Trained at Milan's Civica Scuola di Liuteria, Riccardo follows the classic Cremonese construction technique, using an internal form. His expertise in instrument restoration allows him to replicate the tonal qualities of antique violins.

Material selection is central to Riccardo’s craft. He carefully chooses woods based on their acoustic properties, seeking the ideal balance of elasticity, weight, and sound speed. Riccardo typically uses seasoned spruce from Val di Fiemme, though younger spruce also produces excellent results. For the backs, handles and sides he selects maple for its lightness and historical resonance, ensuring the highest acoustic standards. His attention to detail extends to the precise mathematical proportions of the instrument, from internal nodes to the curvature of the arching, optimizing sound quality.

Riccardo also creates his own varnishes, blending conifer resin with carefully selected ingredients. His research into pigments ensures the instruments maintain their color over time, even with light exposure. Every aspect of the instrument, from the graceful scrolls to the intricate inlays, is crafted with precision, making each piece a work of art.

His involvement doesn’t end when his violins and violas leave the workshop. He often receives them back for adjustments or restoration after years of use, maintaining a lasting relationship with his creations. This ongoing dedication ensures that the legacy of each instrument continues to evolve, positioning Riccardo as a modern steward of a centuries-old craft.
