What we do
Maker Mile works closely with the local community, establishing direct relationships with artisans and promoting the sharing of knowledge through exhibitions, meetings, and workshops. Our goal is to create a dynamic ecosystem where artisans, professionals, and students can engage in dialogue and collaborate, strengthening the bond between craft heritage and modern experimentation.
The project is based on research, study, and knowledge of traditional techniques, but above all on human relationships. With an interdisciplinary approach, we create a digital archive to document and preserve artisan knowledge. We provide direct access to a "Mile" of local and sustainable production, stimulating new synergies and contributing to the revitalization of the local economy by enhancing materials and skills from the region.
The city
Maker Mile was born in Venice with the mission of calling attention to the trades that forge its social and cultural framework. Here, the balance between tradition and its evolving forms serves as a driving force for cultural regeneration and re-appropriation. Artisanal crafts are not just techniques passed down through generations; they embody the city's history, creativity, and identity.
In a world increasingly driven by mass production and fast consumption, and in a city challenged by rising costs and diminishing workshop spaces, the enduring practices of these artisans stand as a testament to the value of skill, patience, and perseverance. Through their work, they contribute not only to the local fabric of the city but also to a deeper connection between past and present, and between people, reminding us that humanity and quality craftsmanship go hand in hand.
As an ever-evolving, itinerant project, Maker Mile aspires to constantly expand and explore the nuances of craft and heritage. Venice, with its rich history of centuries-old, unique craftsmanship, is the perfect place to begin this journey.
