Fallani Venezia is an iconic screen printing workshop and a creative hub in Venice since 1968. Its founder, Fiorenzo Fallani, introduced screen printing to Italy from the United States, making his space a reference point for high-quality limited edition prints. Continuing in his father’s legacy, Gianpaolo Fallani is determined to preserve the artistic side of the family trade by focusing solely on screen printing. Under his leadership, the workshop moved to a wide, airy industrial space by the Fondamente Nove in Cannaregio.
The screen printing technique at the heart of Fallani’s work is straightforward but requires great skill and precision—qualities that Gianpaolo masters and possesses. The matrix for printing is a screen frame, typically made of wood or metal, stretched with a fine mesh. Through a photomechanical process, the image to be printed is transferred onto the screen, creating a negative matrix. The areas where ink should not pass are blocked, while the open areas allow ink to pass through during the printing process. Using a squeegee, the ink is spread across the screen, which deposits the ink onto paper. Gianpaolo’s artistry comes through in the multiple layers of ink he uses to build depth, contrast, and tone. His technique transforms reproduction into a unique piece of art that preserves the essence of the original while standing alone as a new creation.
The trusting relationship between Gianpaolo and the artists he works with is central to the creative process as he helps them understand both the limitations and the possibilities of the technique, guiding them to create works that are interpretations of their original ideas. In time and thanks to Gianpaolo’s work, Fallani Venezia has become a place where the boundaries between art and technique blur; a space for creative exchange, experimentation, and collaboration.
