More than just a workshop, Gianni Basso’s Antica Stamperia is a living museum of traditional letterpress printing. The atmosphere brims with nostalgia—a place where the scent of ink mingles with that of aged metal. Here, there are no screens or computers, only vintage machines, rows of hand-printed cards, and packages addressed in elegant script, ready to be sent across the globe. Authenticity permeates every detail, from the tools to Gianni himself, who charms visitors with his wit, referring to himself as “Mr. Gutenberg” and proudly showcasing his illustrious clientele, including aristocrats, collectors, and Hollywood stars.

Gianni’s printing journey began when, as a child, his father sent him to an Armenian monastery to learn discipline. He spent 15 years there mastering Gutenberg-era presses, printing texts in 38 languages and 10 alphabets. When the monastery modernized its operations, adopting computers—an approach Gianni deems devoid of artistry—he set out to preserve traditional methods. Faithful to 18th-century craftsmanship, he opened his workshop on Calle del Fumo, where he has kept the art alive for over three decades.

The workshop is a treasure trove of historical printing presses and typefaces, featuring tools from the 19th and 20th centuries. Notable machines include the “Ultra Balilla” linotype and a 19th-century German lithographic press from Leipzig. A Boston paper cutter is also in constant use. Ever the storyteller, Gianni delights in sharing the histories of these tools, demonstrating their use with infectious enthusiasm. Every corner holds treasures: brochures, leaflets, lead typefaces, and photos of Armenian masters.

The workshop produces elegant bespoke stationery, including correspondence cards, invitations, bookplates, and business cards. Visitors can choose from an array of fonts and stamps or request unique designs. In the last decade, Gianni’s son Stefano has joined him, helping to welcome international clients and fulfill their stationery dreams.
