Boldrin’s Jester breaks away from the classic iconography of the carefree and grotesque figure, instead revealing a surprising emotional complexity. A painted tear on the face betrays the melancholy hidden within, suggesting that, while bringing joy to the court, this character experiences inner conflict. Unbound to a specific historical period, the Jester is among the most significant masks in Boldrin’s collection and one of his favorites. Along with the Bautta, the Jester appeared in Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece Eyes Wide Shut.
